Efficacy in deceptive vocal exaggeration of human body size

چکیده

Abstract How can deceptive communication signals exist in an evolutionarily stable signalling system? To resolve this age-old honest paradox, researchers must first establish whether deception benefits deceivers. However, while vocal exaggeration is widespread the animal kingdom and assumably adaptive, its effectiveness biasing listeners has not been established. Here, we show that human detect produced by vocalisers who volitionally shift their voice frequencies to exaggerate or attenuate perceived size. Listeners also judge relative heights of cheaters, whose retain reliable acoustic cues interindividual height. Importantly, although biases listeners’ absolute height judgments, recalibrate assessments for they correctly concurrently identify as deceptive, particularly men judging men. Thus, size fool listeners, benefiting deceiver, detection reduce bias mitigate costs underscoring unremitting arms-race between signallers receivers communication.

Human Vocal Attractiveness as Signaled by Body Size Projection

Voice, as a secondary sexual characteristic, is known to affect the perceived attractiveness of human individuals. But the underlying mechanism of vocal attractiveness has remained unclear. Here, we presented human listeners with acoustically altered natural sentences and fully synthetic sentences with systematically manipulated pitch, formants and voice quality based on a principle of body siz...

Volitional exaggeration of body size through fundamental and formant frequency modulation in humans

Several mammalian species scale their voice fundamental frequency (F0) and formant frequencies in competitive and mating contexts, reducing vocal tract and laryngeal allometry thereby exaggerating apparent body size. Although humans' rare capacity to volitionally modulate these same frequencies is thought to subserve articulated speech, the potential function of voice frequency modulation in hu...

The evolution of acoustic size exaggeration in terrestrial mammals

Recent studies have revealed that some mammals possess adaptations that enable them to produce vocal signals with much lower fundamental frequency (F0) and formant frequency spacing (ΔF) than expected for their size. Although these adaptations are assumed to reflect selection pressures for males to lower frequency components and exaggerate body size in reproductive contexts, this hypothesis has...

Human Detection of Deceptive Speech

We report a perception study in which judges attempted to label as deceptive or truthful the recorded interviews of the ColumbiaSRI-Colorado Corpus of deceptive speech. In general, judges performed very poorly at the task, scoring on average worse than chance. We use these results to contextualize ‘current best’ machine learning performance on this corpus. In addition, we report strong findings...

The Effects of Size and Type of Vocal Fold Polyp on Some Acoustic Voice Parameters

Background: Vocal abuse and misuse would result in vocal fold polyp. Certain features define the extent of vocal folds polyp effects on voice acoustic parameters. The present study aimed to define the effects of polyp size on acoustic voice parameters, and compare these parameters in hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic polyps. Methods: In the present retrospective study, 28 individuals with hemorrha...
